South Africa-based payment-services provider Metacom reportedly plans to test CellPAD, a GSM-based transactions device, in Australia and the Middle East. The device, which resembles a modem, enables consumers to make debit and credit card payments. The device transfers cardholder data and payment information from consumers to retailers and banks via mobile-phone networks, according to press reports. Metacom did not respond to a CardLine Global request for comment. The company says the technology is useful for rural areas, which often lack standard card terminals. Metacom already has introduced the product to banks, retailers and petrol chains in South Africa.
