Having cornered the mobile remote deposit capture market with its software, Mitek Systems Inc. is pushing a new service it says helps companies enroll their customers’ bank accounts by snapping a picture of blank check with a smartphone.
The San Diego-based vendor does not have any clients signed up to use its Mobile ACH Enrollment service, but it does have some that are testing it, Drew Hyatt, Mitek vice president of sales and business development, said in a March 2 interview.
Hyatt would not name the companies that are testing Mitek’s software. However, he said the service is ideal to offer to business clients that require a customer to enroll a bank account for billing purposes and that already offer the ability to make payments via a mobile app.
“The primary reasons for a customer to drop off of the enrollment process is either they’re not comfortable writing in the numbers, they’re not sure which numbers to write into which space, or they make mistakes,” Hyatt said, adding that on a mobile device, entering that information is more difficult because of smaller keyboards.
Using Mitek’s software, a consumer would be able to enroll a checking account by photographing a check with a mobile device’s camera. Mitek’s software captures the relevant account information for the biller, which processes the transaction through the automated clearinghouse system.
The majority of mobile remote deposit capture services that enable a bank’s customers to deposit paper checks by taking pictures of them already use Mitek’s imaging technology.
