More Than 900 Collection Agencies, Creditors Sued In November

An estimated 915 lawsuits were filed in November against collection agencies and creditors, including 765 FDCPA lawsuits and 85 FCRA cases, according to research by WebRecon LLC.

In the final two weeks of the month, the numbers tapered with an estimated 315 collection agencies and creditors sued, according to WebRecon LLC, a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based research firm that publishes "The FDCPA Litigant Alert."

A total of 480 lawsuits were filed in the second half of the month, including 408 citing Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) violations; and 39 involving the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Of the total, there were about 501 unique plaintiffs and 148 of them had previously sued under consumer statutes. Combined those 148 plaintiffs have filed 1,384 lawsuits since 2001.

Year-to-date, a total of 9,213 consumer statute lawsuits have been filed in U.S. district courts, including 7,511 FDCPA actions and 1,090 FCRA cases.
