NCR Cuts 252 Jobs In Scotland

NCR Corp. is ending all ATM-manufacturing operations at its plant in Dundee, Scotland, a spokesperson for NCR in the UK tells CardLine Global sister publication ATM&Debit News. NCR announced Thursday it is eliminating all 177 manufacturing jobs at the plant, and the company is cutting 75 jobs in its engineering, solutions-marketing and support facilities. The remaining staff–about 450 workers–will focus on engineering, research and development, marketing and new-product development, the spokesperson says. This is second set of job cuts to hit NCR's manufacturing operations in Dundee during the past two years. In 2007, NCR cut 627 jobs as part of a restructuring of its global manufacturing operations. Those employees worked on high-volume ATMs. The manufacturing staff members who remained worked on low-volume, customized machines, the spokesperson says. United States-based NCR is transferring customized manufacturing to Budapest, Hungry; Pudicherry, India; and Beijing, China, where manufacturing costs are less than in Dundee. Bill Nuti, NCR chairman and CEO, has said his goal is to make NCR the industry's low-cost ATM manufacturer. NCR is the world's largest ATM manufacturer based on 2007 worldwide shipments. Thursday's announcement starts a 90-day consultation process between NCR and the employees' union before the manufacturing plant can close, the spokesperson says.
