WESTbahn Management GmbH has selected VeriFone Systems Inc.’s PAYware Mobile Enterprise and managed-services products for use with its mobile-ticketing validation and payment operations when the company’s rail service begins in December, the payment terminal-maker announced Aug. 8.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The WESTbahn private-rail double-decker trains will operate hourly on the Vienna-Salzburg line.
The rail company will equip all on-board WESTbahn conductors with the PAYware Mobile Enterprise product, which transforms wireless personal digital assistants into secure payment-acceptance devices that can scan two-dimensional bar codes to validate tickets.
“VeriFone’s mobile-payment [product] provides us with another important modernization tool in our efforts to innovate Austrian train service,” Stefan Wehinger, WESTbahn CEO, founder and co-owner, said in VeriFone’s press release. “We’ll be able to provide speedy and convenient on-board ticketing and without the convenience fees that travelers are accustomed to.”
VeriFone Managed Services enables firms to centrally manage their payment-transaction and configuration-management operations, enabling them to avoid the complexity of maintaining the systems required to manage a secure payments environment, VeriFone said.
Introduced in January, PAYware Mobile Enterprise features built-in Near Field Communication, EMV smart card and PIN-entry capabilities.
