New Zealand Petrol Pumps To Accept Contactless Cards

Petroleum retailers in New Zealand reportedly are considering a proposal to accept contactless credit cards for the fuel payment.

British Petroleum PLC and Greenstone Energy Ltd. both are considering accepting contactless credit cards for fuel purchases up to NZ$80 (US$62 and 45 euros) without requiring a PIN or signature to authorize the transaction, local newspaper Business Day reported on Nov. 29

PaymentsSource was unable to reach representatives from either petroleum company for comment.

Their considerations regarding contactless card acceptance come after ANZ Bank Ltd. on Nov. 15 launched the ANZ Rugby World Cup MasterCard credit card, marking the country’s first contactless “tap and go” credit card (see story).

Holders of the EMV chip-and-PIN card may use the contactless function when paying less than NZ$80 at terminals in New Zealand that accept contactless cards.

The first such terminals were installed in Auckland’s Eden Park and Wellington’s Westpac Stadium, which are venues for the Rugby World Cup taking place in September 2011, according to ANZ.
