New Zealand’s ANZ Bank Launches Country’s First Contactless Card

ANZ Bank Ltd. on Nov. 15 launched the ANZ Rugby World Cup MasterCard credit card, marking the country’s first contactless “tap and go” credit card.

Holders of the EMV chip-and-PIN card may use the contactless function when paying less than NZ$80 (US$62 and 45 euros) at terminals in New Zealand that accept contactless cards. The first such terminals were installed in Auckland’s Eden Park and Wellington’s Westpac Stadium, which are venues at for the Rugby World Cup taking place in September 2011, according to the bank.

Additional terminals soon will be deployed at more stadiums and at specific retailers near them, and the bank also plans eventually to introduce the technology at more and more retailers throughout the country.

The issuer charges cardholders NZ$95 per year for the card, which comes with a NZ$5,000 credit limit.
