Paysafecard Adds Augmented Reality to Show Store Locations

Vienna-based prepaid payment provider paysafecard has updated its mobile app to include augmented reality, a technology that displays data over a view of the physical world.

Augmented reality provides users with a more visual experience than the overhead neighborhood map displayed by most geolocation or GPS functions. Users point their mobile devices in the direction of a store, and are shown a picture to go along with the directions. Paysafecard did not return a request for comment on details of the app by deadline.

Other new features in the paysafecard app include an option to rate sales outlets immediately while shopping, a feature designed to let users know where paysafecard purchases can be made. The company has also added QR code payments and mobile access to the user's online account.

Augmented reality is still relatively rare in payments. Alliance Data Systems recently added augmented reality to the suite of technology it sells to merchants to drive the use of retail cards. PNC has also used augmented reality as a way to locate ATMs, and the Google Glass headset provides a similar experience by putting information in a user's field of vision.
