Moscow-based Sberbank says it has begun issuing its first credit cards in the Volga-Vyatka region of Russia. The bank is issuing cards carrying the MasterCard and Visa brands and initially is issuing them only to customers who have had "salary accounts" with the financial institution for at least six months. Employers open such accounts for their employees, who have their pay directly deposited into the accounts. Despite the ongoing financial crisis, Sberbank has no plans to reduce its card-issuing activities, a bank spokesperson tells CardLine Global.
