SmartCard Marketing Systems Inc., which manages prepaid card programs, announced Friday that its second-quarter card loads and payment-processing volume totaled $458,688, up 68% compared with $272,937 during the same quarter in 2007. Max Barone, SmartCard CEO, tells CardLine its NASCAR car sponsorship beginning in February helped increase the company's volume. Operating losses for the quarter fell by 40% for the first six months of the year, to $109,169 from $182,013 for the first half of 2007. Based in San Antonio, SmartCard focuses on payroll and international funds-transfer cards, Barone tells CardLine. It offers prepaid MasterCards issued by Storm Lake, Iowa-based Meta Bank, Minneapolis-based U.S. Bancorp, and Servus Credit Union Ltd., which is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
