Square has hired Ben Pfisterer, a former National Australia Bank and Visa executive, to lead its Australian division. Square has its other global offices in Japan and Canada, as well as its home base of San Francisco, Calif.

Square will leverage its knowledge of the local market to establish "an exciting product roadmap in the future that will help to make commerce easier for Australian small business owners,” Pfisterer stated in a May 21 press release.

The company began shipping its Register tablet in Australia in November as part of a global rollout, saying it fits the needs of small business operators in Australia, particularly at cafes and restaurants, bars and clubs, retail stores, hair and beauty businesses, florists and market traders.

Square made its initial move in Australia in early 2014 with its mobile card reader.

PayPal made its PayPal Here chip-and-PIN mobile card reader available to merchants around the same time in Australia in April of 2014.
