Sampath Bank PLC says it has launched a chip-based, Visa-branded credit card. The Sri Lanka-based bank initially will issue the card to customers with platinum Visa cards. Sampath plans to offer the cards to customers with Visa gold and silver cards in early 2009, the bank says in a statement. The cards also will have magnetic stripes so customers can use them at merchant locations that cannot accept chip cards. The bank is backing the effort by deploying chip card terminals, though the bank gave few details about that effort. The cards conform to the global EMV antifraud standard, Sampath says.
