Smart Transaction Systems Inc. has launched a text-messaging system that enables mobile merchants to process gift and loyalty card transactions using any cell phone. Text-2-Transact enables mobile merchants to send details of a gift and loyalty card transaction to Smart Transaction Systems using a text message. Smart Transaction Systems then sends back an approval or decline text message, according to a company release. Merchants likely will pay a setup fee to use the service, a company spokesperson says, noting no fees have yet been set. The service is ideal for farmers-market vendors and pizza-delivery drivers, the Boulder, Colo.-based company says. "Very few pizza restaurants accept their own gift cards for pizza delivery because the cost of specialized, mobile, wireless terminals can be prohibitive," Ray Clopton, company president, says in a statement.
