Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission, a regulatory agency, says it needs to establish a "currency-settlement mechanism" before consumers can use their China UnionPay ATM cards in Taiwan. China UnionPay is a payment network based in China. A commission spokesperson declined to tell CardLine Global when that mechanism would be ready to enable transactions in Chinese yuan and Taiwanese new dollars. A spokesperson for China UnionPay also declined comment. Regulators in China and Taiwan began talks last year about UnionPay card acceptance in Taiwan.
