In a move that could increase competition in Taiwan’s mobile-payments market, telecommunication operator Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. has declared plans to begin offering payment services by the end of this year.
Far EasTone initially is seeking retail and financial partners, a spokesperson for the Taipei-based operator told PaymentsSource in an interview. The company expects to release one or two mobile-payment applications for portable smart devices in the second half of this year, he confirmed. The telco then gradually would expand to include phones equipped with Near Field Communication technology, he said.
Far EasTone is Taiwan’s third-largest operator based on total subscribers and is one of the nation’s six licensed WiMax wireless broadband operators.
