Telecommunications company Tigo Tanzania has expanded digital money transfers, allowing customers to send and receive money from their mobile wallets with other providers in the East African region.
Tigo Pesa wallet users will be connected to M-Pesa in Kenya, MTN in Uganda and Airtel in Rwanda, easing cross-border processing.
The new service cross-border between the four countries allows "businesses and families to transfer money quickly and securely" while also strengthening Tigo as a provider of mobile financial services for its users, Angelica Pesha, acting chief officer for mobile financial services at Tigo Tanzania, said in a Tuesday press release.
To send money, Tigo Pesa users dial a code on their mobile phones, and select the option to send money, and to which country.
M-Pesa has been in use in Kenya through Safaricom for more than a decade, operating as one of the first mobile money movers in Africa or any other country. MTN's MoMoPay has also operated in Uganda for the past several years.
Tigo Tanzania is a unit of MIC Tanzania Limited, which has been in operation since 1993 and has more than 11 million subscribers to its various phone and home internet services.
