The Ontario-based company, which already allows virtual Near Field Communication payments using Host Card Emulation technology, will also support bar codes and will integrate its app with Apple's Passbook.

With the bar code technology, Hortons customers can use their phones to pay for coffee and other items by using the app to display a bar code over the point of sale terminal reader.

The customer has to have the TimmyMe mobile app and prepaid Tim Card to make a payment this way, the company states in a May 22 press release. The bar code technology works on Apple and Android devices.

"We're continuously working to implement best-in-class, customer-centric technology in our restaurants and the launch of mobile bar code payments enables us to offer the best overall guest experience," David Clanachan, chief operating officer at Hortons, states in the press release.
