The National Association of Convenience Stores plans to distribute free signs later this summer to help its gas-station members display card-interchange complaints to customers at fuel pumps. "Pumptopper" signs normally promote gas stations and their special offers, such as a free liter of soda or car wash with a fill up. But the association said in an announcement last week that its signs will say "That pain you are experiencing in part is caused by secret credit card fees" and "Tell Congress you want to know how much this fill-up will cost you in credit card fees." The association is asking members to post the signs from Aug. 1 to Sept. 6, during the congressional summer recess when U.S. House and Senate members are more likely to be in their home districts.
