Uber Switches to Android Pay

Uber riders that prefer to pay with Google Wallet will have to switch to Android Pay on May 9, according to emails reportedly sent out to Google Wallet users.

Though Google relegated Google Wallet, its original mobile wallet, to being a person-to-person payment app upon the launch of Android Pay last year, apps such as Uber still supported Google Wallet transfers for in-app payments. Android Pay started supporting in-app purchases in December.

Uber is in the process of notifying customers of the switch, according to a report on AndroidCentral.com. Former Google Wallet users can input a card manually to pay for future rides or use a card already enrolled with Android Pay, the article said.

Uber is well-known for its savvy handling of payment options, making the transaction almost invisible to the rider. It has also partnered with financial services companies such as American Express and Capital One on promotions, and with Green Dot on making faster payments to drivers.
