The Minneapolis-based banking company has partnered with vendors Monitise Americas and Fidelity National Information Services Inc. to develop applications for users of the bank’s ReliaCard.

Monitise Americas is a joint venture of FIS and Monitise PLC in London.

The Visa-branded prepaid card is available in 16 states for consumers who receive recurring cash disbursements from a government agency. The new apps, which are available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry smartphones, according to the ReliaCard website, enable consumers to check balances, pay bills, receive alerts and view mini-statements.

Last year, U.S. Bancorp released similar apps for users of its AccelaPay prepaid card, which employers give to workers who do not have traditional checking accounts to receive their payroll (see story).

U.S. Bancorp is “committed to investing in new technologies to better serve its customers,” Kevin Morrison, the prepaid senior vice president for the company’s Retail Payment Solutions business, said in a press release.
