Two years after launching its first version of mobile banking, U.S. Bancorp has upgraded the service by integrating it with online banking and expanding its remote deposit check capture offering to include more devices.
The bank’s new mobile banking app, launched Nov. 21, supports remote check deposits from Apple Inc. iPhones and Google Inc. Android smartphones. Customers also may deposit checks remotely via Apple’s iPad starting in January, the company said in a press release.
With remote check capture, customers use the camera on their mobile device to capture images of the front and back of the draft to initiate an electronic deposit.
Customers also now can move between online banking and the mobile app to perform functions, such as setting up bill payments online and then making the payment using the mobile app, Niti Badarinath, U.S. Bank senior vice president and head of mobile banking, tells PaymentsSource.
Mobile-banking features that now match services available through U.S. Bank’s online-banking service include immediate access to account balances and transaction history, funds transfers and bill payment.
U.S. Bank’s new provider, Fiserv Inc., now enables the bank to integrate person-to-person payments as well, says Badarinath.
The bank launched its first mobile app in 2009 with Firethorn Holdings LLC, which later decided to discontinue its mobile-banking operations, a move that resulted in U.S. Bank having to find another provider (
Fiserv also provided U.S. Bank’s online-banking platform, enabling the bank to combine access to both online and mobile banking, says Badarinath.
Before the upgrade, customers had to use a six-digit login number to access mobile banking, a feature that was unpopular with customers, he says. With the new version of the mobile-banking app, customers can use their online banking login information.
Fiserv in June also purchased CashEdge Inc., which has provided U.S. Bank’s Pay-A-Person P2P service, says Badarinath (
