Visa Inc. plans to deliver Visa payment and other services on Nokia 6212 Classic handsets, which Nokia expects to make available next month. The applications will enable consumers to pay for goods and services via Near Field Communication technology, initiate mobile funds transfers to other individuals with Visa accounts, receive text notifications of activity on their Visa accounts, and opt in to receive offers of discounts with merchants. Visa will make the applications available initially for trial use by financial institutions. During the Visa Innovation Briefing 2008 this morning in New York, Teppo Paavola, Nokia vice president and head of corporate business development, said Nokia will embed the NFC chip in the phone as part of the Visa initiative, not in the phone's SIM card. However, he said Nokia is ambivalent in terms of where the NFC application resides in its phones.
