Payment-services company Merchant Link LLC and point-of-sale terminal maker Pax Technology Ltd. have signed agreements to use Voltage Security Inc.’s advanced SecureData encryption service, the security technology company announced in separate news releases Jan. 11.
SecureData encrypts transaction data as the information moves between two points, such as between a payment terminal and a merchant processor. Merchants may use the service with POS terminals, electronic cash registers and e-commerce systems, Cupertino, Calif.-based Voltage says.
In its deal with Silver Spring, Md.-based Merchant Link, Voltage’s SecureData service will work in conjunction with Merchant Link’s Transaction Vault service, which protects stored sensitive payment information by replacing it with a token.
“To take the next step, we needed a [means] to protect cardholder data in flight,” Tim Kinsella, Merchant Link executive vice president of sales and marketing, tells PaymentsSource.
SecureData encrypts data at the point of sale and decrypts the information once Merchant Link’s payment gateway securely receives it, Kinsella says. From the gateway, Merchant Link sends the data on to processor for authorization ultimately by the issuing bank.
Merchant Link is targeting large merchants with more than 1 million card transactions annually, Kinsella says.
Testing will begin soon, and the service should be available later this year. Merchants pay either a per-transaction or a monthly subscription fee for Merchant Link’s services, Kinsella notes.
China-based Pax, whose U.S. offices are in Melville, N.Y., will incorporate SecureData into its payment terminals, Voltage says.
