Despite the worldwide economic downturn, ATM manufacturer Wincor Nixdorf AG's 2008 fiscal year was the best in company history, Eckard Heidloff, the firm's president and CEO, told reporters today at the manufacturer's annual news conference in Dusseldorf, Germany. Paderborn, Germany-based Wincor Nixdorf reported net sales of $3 billion (2,319 million euros), up 7% compared to $2.8 billion (2,145 million euros) in 2007's fiscal year. The company reported a profit of $165.2 million (127 million euros), up 17% compared to $141.8 million (109 million euros). Wincor Nixdorf matched its sales' and earnings' forecasts issued at the beginning of its fiscal year despite "a sharp deterioration in general conditions since then," Heidloff says. Net sales for the company's banking business, which include ATMs, were $2 billion, up 11% from $1.8 billion during the last fiscal year. Retail banking has not reacted strongly to the dramatic changes in the world economy, he says. "Retail banking has proven to be the business segment in the banking arena that reacts with least volatility to market circumstance," Heidloff says. Wincor Nixdorf is the world's second-largest ATM manufacturer based on 2007 shipments. The company's U.S. headquarters is in Austin.
