Wirecard, Mastercard launch prepaid card for gas in Slovenia

Petrol, Slovenia’s leading gas station operator, has partnered with Wirecard and Mastercard, enabling users of Petrol’s MBills mobile wallet to add a prepaid Mastercard to their accounts.

Mbills wallet users may apply for the prepaid card within the app and use the virtual or physical card for online and in-store shopping, Wirecard said in a recent press release.

Petrol acquired Slovenian fintech firm MBills last year to drive more electronic transactions in a market where 80 percent of purchases are made in cash. MBills had previously developed the petroleum retailer’s mobile wallet, which supports bill payment, loyalty and enables Petrol customers to withdraw and deposit cash at more than 300 Petrol stations across Slovenia.

Adding the prepaid Mastercard will expand payment use cases for the wallet with feature such as P2P, Wirecard said in the release.

“The new payment function in the MBills mobile wallet ecosystem, and it’s a core competency of Wirecard,” said Boris Bongartz, Wirecard’s head of digital goods sales, in the release.

“Our services have positioned mobile wallets in Slovenia as competitive cash solutions more quickly than expected,” added Primoz Zupan, MBills’ director, in the release.
