Thailand using ATM software from Applied Communications.

Applied Communications Inc., based in Omaha, said it has become the main software provider to Thailand's national automated teller machine network.

The government-run-network, Thailand ATM Pool Co., provides ATM transaction switching to 15 commercial banks in Thailand. These banks currently operate about 1,700 ATMs, which handle about 200,000 transactions each day. This level of traffic would rank the network around 50th were it operating in the United States.

The software, known as Base24, has been fully installed since the end of October. It runs on hardware by Tandem Computers Inc., from which Applied Communications' senior managers have agreed to buy the software firm.

Suthee Sutthumvilai, general manager of ACI's Thai distributor, said the transition to Base24 went smoothly. He said that all 15 banks participating in the network were converted to the new software in less than a year.

ACI believes there are further growth opportunities in Thailand for point of sale processing.
