Continental finds optimism in Chicago.

CHICAGO - Continental Bank said 34% of medium-size Chicago-area companies plan to expand their operations in 1994, up from 27% that did so this year.

The company said a bank survey of 100 companies also found that 45% of the companies plan to add employees next year, up slightly from the 43% that added to their work forces in 1993.

The bank said only 6% intend to decrease the size of their staffs, compared with 14% who did so this year.
