Maryland.

The state's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.2% in April, according to the Maryland Department of Economic and Employment Development.

Employment fell in April to 2.43 million workers, down 15,494 from the number of people employed during March. A decline of 18,307 in the state's labor force helped reduce joblessness by 2,813 to 159,753.

According to the department, there were nearly 3,000 fewer unemployed people in April 1993 than in April 1992.

The department said that while unemployment remained nearly unchanged, there are signs that employers are hiring more than in previous months.

In a separate survey of Maryland businesses, all major sectors except manufacturing reported increased hirings.
