Republican-ordered budget cutbacks for the House Banking Committee are expected to take a severe toll on the number of Democratic staff members.

Committee sources say the Democrats' staff will be slashed from 70 to no more than 23. One source said the actual number could turn out to be 17 or 18.

Among those told to look elsewhere for a job is the chief economist, Robert Auerbach, who earned $93,000 a year and worked closely with outgoing chairman Henry Gonzalez of Texas to oversee the Federal Reserve.
