Dime settles lending dispute with N.H.

NEW YORK -- Dime Savings Bank of New York said it reached an agreement with New Hampshire's attorney general to end an investigation into its lending practices.

Dime said the settlement, described as an assistance plan for former and current Dime borrowers in New Hampshire, is similar to agreements previously reached new Connecticut and Massachusetts officials.

The program covers qualified borrowers who have, or had, adjustable-rate loans with a negative amortization feature. Borrowers who are current on their payments will be offered the chance to convert at minimal cost to adjustable-rate loans without the negative amortization feature.

Borrowers who face foreclosure because of temporary financial hardship will be able to apply to restructure their loans to make payments more affordable. In other cases, borrowers will be able to work with the bank to sell their houses and be released from further loan obligations.
