In Brief: Ga. Thrift VP Cancels Resignation

MACON, Ga. - Will he or won't he? He won't.

An executive vice president at First Liberty Bank in Macon submitted his resignation in early July, saying that he would be accepting a job with a Lawrenceville, N.J., thrift.

First Liberty said Larry D. Flowers was taking a job as executive vice president of Trenton Savings Bank and would become the $441 million-asset thrift's chief executive when the current CEO retires.

There was just one problem: A spokesman for Trenton Savings said that though the New Jersey thrift had interviewed Mr. Flowers, he had not been hired.

A week later, Mr. Flowers said he had changed his mind and was staying at First Liberty after all.

"He was moving up to New Jersey, but then he elected not to do that," said Robert F. Hatcher, chief executive of First Liberty. "He and I got back together and decided jointly that he's staying here. We are particularly happy about that."

Mr. Hatcher would not discuss whether Mr. Flowers had turned down the Trenton Savings job offer, or whether there had ever been one. Mr. Flowers and Trenton CEO Wendell T. Breithaupt could not be reached for comment.

Mr. Flowers has been at $804 million-asset First Liberty for two and a half years, in charge of overhauling the company's retail banking department. He had previously been with Citibank in Miami.
