Card Briefs: Chip Card Upgrade From Schlumberger

MONTROUGE, France - Schlumberger Smart Cards and Systems said it has released a new operating system that lowers the costs and shortens the time required for launching chip card programs.

The software, called Multiflex, comes with a library of functions common to all smart cards and a means of programming that allow for rapid testing and validation before moving into full-scale chip production.

System designers are thereby freed to focus on specializing and customizing their applications to meet users' needs, Schlumberger said.

The company, which owns Malco Plastics and Danyl Corp. in the United States, added that Multiflex's library includes two security alternatives: DES (the U.S. data encryption standard algorithm) and RSA from RSA Data Security Inc., Redwood City, Calif.
