Short Takes: Morningstar Enhances Fund Research Software

Morningstar Corp. has revamped its investment research software to make it easier for investors to gather data on mutual funds, annuities, and variable life policies.

The new software, unveiled late last month, allows users to create customized investment scenarios and graph them on computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.

Known as the Principia line, the data base includes performance data, rankings, and investment style for more than 6,500 mutual funds.

The data base also includes information on 500 closed-end funds, and 3,100 variable annuity and variable life subaccounts.

Morningstar said in a statement that it plans to roll out additional data bases, and research tools, in the next few months.
