NEW YORK - MasterCard International, which recently unveiled plans for a smart card pilot in Canberra, Australia, announced a number of technology partners for the project.
Orga Card Systems of Paderborn, Germany, and Solaic Smart Cards of Paris will provide chip cards and operating systems for the pilot, scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter.

Two operating systems will coexist in the pilot to demonstrate chip cards' interoperability and compatibility with proven technology.
MasterCard said it will develop its own operating system for subsequent commercial launches.

Terminals will be provided by Verifone Inc. of Redwood City, Calif., and two Australian companies, Fortronic and Keycorp. The latter is unrelated to the U.S. banking company of the same name.
