Banker Gets 30 Days for Assaulting Wife

The former president of Hudson City Savings Institution, who resigned after being arrested for a domestic fight with his wife, was convicted last week of assault.

Edward A. Brablc was sentenced by a village judge to 30 days in a county jail and fined $1,000 for the misdemeanor charge, despite pleas from Mr. Brablc's attorney and his wife not to prosecute or convict him.

The judge stayed the sentence until July 15 to allow time for an appeal.

The former president of the $591 million-asset thrift was convicted of hitting his wife, who is employed at another thrift, in a March 10 fight at their home. Two bones under her left eye were broken, according to the Albany Times-Union. Evidence indicated that the couple actually exchanged swings, the newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, Hudson City has elected Carl A. Florio to replace Mr. Brablc as president and chief executive. Mr. Florio, who has been chief financial officer since joining the thrift in 1993, had been acting chief operating officer since Mr. Brablc resigned April 5.

Before he came to Hudson City, Mr. Florio was a partner at the accounting firm of Pattison, Koskey, Rath & Florio, where he focused on auditing banks and thrifts in the Hudson Valley.
