How the Survey Was Done:

The 1996 American Banker survey of bank technology was conducted by Payment Systems Inc., a Tampa-based research and consulting firm.

Results are based on telephone responses from 91 banks with at least $100 million of assets. They ranged in size, with 22 ranked among the top 100 bank holding companies. Senior representatives in the banks' information technology areas answered a 14-page questionnaire in June and July. Because of dissimilarities among the institutions, multiple weighting schemes were required for consistency and comparability of data.
