Union Bank of California, Los Angeles, has named director of finance David I. Matson to its executive management committee.

He succeeds David W. Ehlers, who will retire later this year. Don Brunell, executive vice president and deputy director of finance, is also expected to retire.

Mr. Matson was also named director of finance of Union Bank of California's holding company, Unionbancal Corp., itself owned by Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd.

Mr. Matson had been executive vice president and head of institutional and deposit markets in the bank's commercial financial services group.

Glendale Federal Bank in California promoted Tim Arick to president and chief operating officer of its Verdugo Trustee Service Corp., succeeding Mel Marror, who retired in April.

Verdugo manages trusteeships, foreclosures, and reconveyances of land and is responsible for Glendale Federal's title relationships.

Mr. Arick, who was a Verdugo vice president responsible for business development, was also named senior vice president at Glendale Federal. He came to Verdugo last year from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, where he was responsible for land-use planning issues.
