Gingrich Backs Credit Union Expansion

House leaders will push legislation allowing credit unions to serve employees of more than one company, House Rules Committee Chairman Gerald B.H. Solomon said Tuesday.

House Speaker "Newt Gingrich would like to have a member of the Republican majority introduce legislation to do this," the New York lawmaker told a National Association of Federal Credit Unions conference.

"In the next several days, you will see a member of the House Banking Committee introduce legislation."

Rep. Solomon did not specify which lawmaker would sponsor the bill. But he said the measure would be aimed at overturning an October federal court decision that banned credit unions from expanding their fields of membership. The Supreme Court has agreed to review that ruling.
