Warburg Merger-Watcher Lists Six Likely Buyout Targets

Thomas H. Hanley, a bank analyst at Warburg Dillon Read, listed six of his favorite takeover targets, their likely acquirers, and possible takeover prices. Here is his list of likely targets.

First Virginia Banks Inc. of Falls Church, with Wachovia Corp. of Winston-Salem, N.C., or BB&T Corp. of Winston-Salem, N.C., as possible acquirers. Takeover price: $60 to $65 a share.

SouthTrust Corp. of Birmingham, Ala., with Wachovia or BB&T as possible acquirers. Takeover price: $55 a share.

Hibernia Corp. of Columbus, Ohio, with Regions Financial Corp. of Birmingham and SouthTrust as possible acquirers. Takeover price: $24 to $26 a share.

Summit Bancorp of Princeton, N.J., with Bank of New York Co. and Chase Manhattan Corp. of New York as possible acquirers. Takeover price: $65 a share.

Huntington Bancorp, with Fifth Third Bancorp of Cincinnati as a possible buyer. Takeover price: $53.

Mellon Bank Corp. of Pittsburgh, with Fifth Third and Bank of New York as possible acquirers. Takeover price: $55 to $60.
