First Data Adds Online Banking Protections

Trusteer announced on Wednesday that First Data will make two Trusteer services available for its clients to help protect Internet banking and to enhance compliance with new federal guidelines for online security.

Trusteer Rapport and Trusteer Pinpoint, the companies say, will help protect against Trojans such as Zeus, SpyEye and Torpig that can hijack a user's browser and commit fraud. Trusteer Rapport is security software that protects web communication by locking down customer browsers and creating a tunnel for safe communication with the website, according to Trusteer’s website. This prevents man-in-the-browser malware, man-in-the-middle attacks and phishing via website authentication.

Trusteer Pinpoint is a log-in and transaction monitoring system that enables real-time detection of malware infected devices visiting web applications, according to the company’s website. When a malware infected device is used to log-in to a protected application, Pinpoint identifies it and sends a message to the organization about the threat.

Additional online banking security is required by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Counsel's new Internet authentication guidelines, under which institutions will be evaluated beginning in January 2012. The supplemental guidelines issued in June 2011 emphasize the need for performing risk assessments, implementing strategies for preventing risks and increasing customer awareness of risks.
