Rockland Trust Co. of Rockland, Mass. has joined the handful of banks giving their customers the ability to deposit checks with a smartphone.

The $4.7 billion-asset subsidiary of Independent Bank Corp. said Friday that its mDeposit app is available for Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPod Touch and will be available for Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry phones and phones running on Google Inc.'s Android operating system soon.

The app is separate from a mobile banking app that Rockland released Thursday for the iPhone and iPod.
