A lot of people can't find room in the calendar to take six weeks of paid time off per year. But depending on seniority, employees at First Citizens National Bank can get at least that amount. Many add to their vacation time by contributing to the United Way of West Tennessee. Employees who donate an hour's pay per month earn an extra day off for the year. The bank's staff has become one of the local nonprofit's biggest donors, raising more than $75,000 per year.

First Citizens' generosity is apparent in other areas. All staff members are covered by incentive plans featuring what the bank describes as realistic, achievable goals, set for individuals, departments and the bank as a whole. Rewards typically range from 8 percent to 30 percent of salary. And when a promotion is a possibility, the bank doesn't just look for a good match between the job and the employee. It finds out how it can coach the employee to become a good match.

First Citizens, founded in 1889, operates 20 branches and serves nine counties in middle and western Tennessee.
