MIAMI – The FBI said two assailants who robbed an armored truck outside a Space Coast CU branch in Sunrise, Fla., in January made off with a bag holding $280,000 in cash.

As the courier exited the truck around 10:30 a.m., two masked suspects exited a stolen Honda that was parked in the parking lot and ran toward the courier pointing guns, according to documents filed in court last week in connection with the arrest of one of the suspects. One suspect ordered the courier to the ground and tried unsuccessfully to take the courier’s gun. The other suspect grabbed the money bag and the two quickly escaped in the stolen getaway car, according to surveillance video recorded at the scene by the credit union.

As the suspects made their getaway, the courier fired shots at the robbers and hit the Honda several times. A witness saw the suspects enter an adjoining parking lot and get into a silver Lexus, using it to flee the scene. The FBI crime lab collected blood samples from the Honda and the DNA from the blood eventually was used in last week’s arrest of Christopher Ferguson, one of the two suspects in the robbery.

The investigation led authorities to Ferguson’s mother’s house, where the suspect was living, and where they found a Lexus fitting the description of the second getaway car.
