36 More Credit Unions In Mergers During October; 276 Over 10 Months

NCUA approved 36 credit union mergers in October, the most in a year-and-a-half, making a total of 276 mergers approved through the first 10 months of the year. Of the mergers approved in October, 27 involved one or more small credit unions under $5 million in assets, making a total of 163 small credit unions that have disappeared through merger so far this year.

The biggest mergers approved in October were: Orange County's CU, Santa Ana, Calif. ($675 million) with Coastline Community CU, Long Beach., Calif. ($42 million); CoVantage CU, Antigo, Wis. ($380 million) with Community CU of Wausau, Wausau, Wis. ($25 million); Horizon CU, Spokane, Wash. ($225 million) with Mountain View FCU, Spokane ($26 million); and GTE FCU Tampa, Fla., ($1.6 billion) with North Florida FCU, White Springs, Fla. ($15 million).
