7 Striking Workers At CU Are Fired

HAMILTON, Ontario - Seven workers who have been on strike at First Ontario Credit Union have been fired. In a letter to the employees announcing the firings, the credit union cited harassment and intimidation of other employees and members, and the forcible confinement of First Ontario CU personnel.

As reported by the Credit Union Journal May 14, the seven employees had earlier entered a branch, locked themselves inside and padlocked a door. Police smashed open a door to gain entry to the branch. The employees had announced they would not leave until the credit union returned to the bargaining table.

The employees are members of Local 343 of the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE) and have been striking for six months over such issues related to sick pay, vacation and full-time positions. There were 10 employees inside the branch at the time of the occupation. The Hamilton Standard reported there were no arrests made but the strikers have been told charges could be filed following the investigation.

The workers have been striking seeking improved pay and other benefits. The credit union has countered that its offer is quite attractive, with the compensation package being offered totaling approximately $35 per hour (Canadian). The union has said it will fight the termination.

The Hamilton Standard further reported last week that during the FOCU's annual meeting the strike and the firings dominated the agenda. An overflow crowd was in attendance at the meeting, with the newspaper quoting several members as saying they were angry that their voices are not being heard.
