ELMONT, N.Y. – A member of Municipal CU was arrested Monday and charged with altering a stolen Social Security check for $801 to make it look like $6,801.
Angela Jefferson, 38, obtained a Social Security check valued at $801, then etched a 6 onto the check to increase the amount by $6,000. After depositing the check into her account at the Elmont branch of the credit union, she withdrew funds against it, police said.
A credit union fraud analyst later uncovered the alteration and reported the crime. Police are still searching for the man that gave Jefferson the stolen check.
