“Move Your Money Day” was created by the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), which is a “grassroots, student directed, nonpartisan organization that empowers and trains students and engages the community to take collective action in the public interest statewide.” In partnership with seven colleges and universities in Minnesota, the organization said it works to highlight important issues for students today and empower them with knowledge to face these issues.

As one of the few financial institutions to offer free checking, Affinity Plus has a student checking account, Free2BU, which provides the opportunity to name an account, access it online or on a mobile device, and receive rewards such as iTunes gift cards.

“We were so excited to learn about this opportunity to educate students about banking with a credit union and helping them understand that Affinity Plus is there to assist them in reaching their financial goals,” said Amber Shanley, branch manager of the $1.6-billion credit union’s Capitol branch. “We hope to spark an interest in students to become member-owners of our credit union and start feeling the difference in banking with a different kind of financial institution.”
