Another Newspaper CU Stops The Presses

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson News CU, which has served employees of the local newspaper and their families for 58 years, is merging into Hutchinson CU – the latest in a growing list of newspaper-sponsored credit union facing a final edition.

Hutchinson News CU has just 280 members and $1.6 million in assets. It lost $4,943 in 2012. Hutchinson CU is a former teachers’ credit union and has $200 million in assets and 17,500 members.

The disappearance of the local newspaper credit union follows recent mergers of Bay Media FCU (the San Francisco Chronicle); and credit unions for the Boston Globe, New Orleans Times-Picayune, Arizona Republic, Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail, Madison (Wis.) State Capitol Times, the Twin-Falls, Idaho Times-News, and others, being merged out the past three years.
