Another Newspaper CU Stops The Presses

HUTCHINSON, Kan. Hutchinson News CU, which has served employees of the local newspaper and their families for 58 years, is merging into Hutchinson CU the latest in a growing list of newspaper-sponsored credit union facing a final edition.

Hutchinson News CU has just 280 members and $1.6 million in assets. It lost $4,943 in 2012. Hutchinson CU is a former teachers’ credit union and has $200 million in assets and 17,500 members.

The disappearance of the local newspaper credit union follows recent mergers of Bay Media FCU (the San Francisco Chronicle); and credit unions for the Boston Globe, New Orleans Times-Picayune, Arizona Republic, Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail, Madison (Wis.) State Capitol Times, the Twin-Falls, Idaho Times-News, and others, being merged out the past three years.
