CANTON, Ohio-If the credit union's strategic plan calls for extending its reach but the budget won't permit purchasing new ATMs or upgrading existing machines, Diebold recommends outsourcing the self-service network.
By renting the equipment and accompanying servicing and repair, the credit union can "refresh its entire fleet of ATMs and offer the latest technology and functionality without having to make a huge capital investment," explained Keith Lewis, director of marketing. "We are talking about outsourcing the entire management of the ATM infrastructure."
For a fixed monthly cost per ATM, Diebold manages the CU's ATMs. "Due to the economy, we are getting many more requests for this today," Lewis said. "Everything from cash management, to transaction processing, to the maintenance services. And credit unions get a help desk of specific client services reps dedicated to them."
It's not just the economy that's driving the trend, according to Lewis. More credit unions are interested in ATM deposit automation-automating the process of accepting both cash and checks. "By upgrading the technology of your ATM, members can feed checks directly into the ATM, get them scanned front and back, do 40-second quality check, and the check is processed electronically. Now you don't need to incur the costs of sweeping those checks on a daily basis."
Lewis said the move also frees up staff to focus on driving revenue through cross-selling. Upgrading ATMs to a Windows platform also allows the CU to do campaigning at the ATM. Diebold is working with CUs to integrate mobile banking campaigns with ATM promotions.
