Bank Transfer Day Endures At BECU

SEATTLE – Bank Transfer Day is not over yet for BECU, where a variety of local religious groups calling themselves Washington Faith-Based Organizations to Divest from Bank of America, are planning to move hundreds of thousands of dollars of accounts this morning.

Two of the groups, the Church Council of Greater Seattle and Faith Action Network, said they are closing their accounts at Bank of America and moving them a block away to the branch of BECU, the one-time Boeing Employees CU.

The groups said in a statement they will settle their BofA accounts this morning along with a broad coalition of people of faith, community members, students, and others “who are fed up with banks that have been receiving tax benefits while avoiding tax payments and making profits at the expense of communities.”

BECU, the nation’s fourth largest credit union, has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Bank Transfer Day, the initiative started after the failed BofA effort to start charging for debit transactions, and added more than 20,000 members in the weeks before after Nov. 5.
